Want to Provide Exempt Care?
Family, Friend, and Neighbor Care (FFN)
Family, friend, and neighbor care is home-based child care—in the caregiver’s or child’s home—provided by relatives, friends, neighbors, or nannies/babysitters who are unlicensed. Exempt, providers can only care for one family at a time in addition to their own.
Recreation Programs/Camps
Recreation (Rec) Programs or Camps care for children in groups. California does not require that recreation programs or camps be licensed. This type of care is generally used for school-age children for short periods of time (e.g., summer care, holiday care, before and after school).

TrustLine Background Check
TrustLine Background Check is a helpful tool for parents choosing a potential nanny or babysitter. Caregivers Registered with TrustLine, have no disqualifying criminal convictions, arrests or substantiated child abuse reports in California. TrustLine is the only background check authorized by state law to use three databases that the general public, including private investigators and private background check companies, cannot access. These databases include the fingerprint records from the California Department of Justice’s California Criminal History System; the Child Abuse Central Index of California; and fingerprint records of the FBI Criminal History System.
